Visit the Fremantle Prison, Rumoured to Be Haunted

Fremantle Prison has played a pivotal, grisly role in Australian history, and it is not a place for the faint of heart. Convicts were first tasked with constructing a prison for themselves upon their arrival in the convict colony in the 1850s.

After 136 years of service, the notorious maximum-security prison closed its doors in 1991. Finally, the most daring among you can pay AU$65 (S$60) to take the Tunnels Tour and descend into the bowels of the prison via boat and on foot.

Skydive Over Rottnest Island

The island of Rottnest is renowned as a premier skydiving destination in Australia. A skydive from 14,000 feet over Western Australia's popular vacation island, with its turquoise waters and views of Perth and the WA coast, is something you should add to your list of must-do activities.

Adventure World

The Perth Mint

Established in 1899 as a branch of the British Royal Mint, the Perth Mint still processes gold from Western Australia's eastern goldfields and mints gold currency to this day. Coins are struck at the Mint, and gold is refined at The Perth Mint Refinery, both of which are conveniently located near Perth Airport.

Get in Line at the Blue Boathouse

Crawley  Edge Boatshed, as it is formally known, is likely the most Instagrammed location in Perth. It's a stunning scene, but you'll need to rise early to capture it.

If you take the 950 bus from Perth's city centre at 8 a.m., you'll arrive at the shed by 8:30 a.m., and just as you're done prancing around taking selfies and fiddling with filters, couples may show up waiting to take pictures.

And Google even has a 'busy now' graph for it! Apparently, the hours of 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. are the least pleasant to visit.

Think You Know Who Dresses Eliza, and How They Do It?

A statue of Eliza's swimmer, created by sculptor Tony Jones, can be found just a couple of minutes' walk to the east of the Blue Boatshed.

You might walk right by her and not even notice that she is dressed, but as you get closer, you'll see that she's sporting an attractive boob tube and skirt ensemble topped with a rainbow flag in honour of the upcoming vote for marriage equality in Australia.

It seems to be the norm for Eliza to dress the part for special occasions; she wore a formal gown for Melbourne Cup Day, a national holiday celebrated across Australia, someone gave her a bike when the Tour de France came through town, and she has a Santa suit for Christmas.

This 2m-tall statue of Eliza stands 15m offshore, and no one knows who or how she gets dressed. It would take a boat to dress her, and no store carries clothing large enough for a woman who is two metres tall. So, "go and see what Eliza is wearing" can be added to your list of exciting activities; it's one of the most original things to do in Perth.

If you've taken any guided tours in other cities, this one might be the best. The tour guides are excellent and very knowledgeable. It's possible to book a tour to see some of the amazing street art in Perth, and have the company deliver much more than that.

The guides have a deep appreciation for their home, and they will delight in pointing out all the little details that make the city unique. You will learn about the unusual features of the Australian Coat of Arms by the old Perth Post Office and see some of Perth's best street art (including the mural at Long Chim) thanks to the tour guides.

The tour lasts for two hours, costs $40 for one person, and less for each additional person in your group. If you don't have much time in the city, this is something you absolutely need to do so that you don't miss out on anything.

Find the Bottletop Tree

On the Oh Hey WA tour, this was one of the highlights. Supposedly started when groups of motorcycle couriers began sitting under the tree and sticking their bottle topsinto the trunk, the Bottle Top Tree can be found at the corner of King and Hay Streets in the Central Business District.

Now, the tree is covered in colourful caps of every hue. It would be easy to miss this tree in the distance, so make sure you give it some attention.

Try the Gin Spin

The Flour Factory, also known as gin heaven, is a great place to begin your exploration of Perth's many exciting nightlife options.

There are over 70 varieties of gin available, and sampling is easy. Take a Spin for Gin wheel. For the low, low price of ten Australian dollars, the bartender will spin the wheel and let you know which of several varieties of gin you've been assigned. Incredibly entertaining way to sample all the gin on offer.

Fasten a Love Lock

While the Perth Belltower is often listed as a must-see attraction in travel guides, you may have mixed feelings about visiting it after already visiting Perth three times and not feeling up to the challenge.

In case you haven't heard, the concept involves locking your eternal love to a padlock with the other person's name on it. The trend was first seen in Paris, but small Love Lock areas have since sprung up in cities across the globe. This one belongs to the city of Perth.

In any case, if bells are your thing and you do desire to go up The Belltower, there is a tour that not only teaches you everything there is to know about the Belltower, but also allows you to participate in the actual chiming of the bells.

See the sun set over the water in spectacular fashion. The sun's rays reflected in the glass buildings to the opposite side make for some beautiful artistic photography opportunities.

Go and See the Containerbow

The city of Fremantle can be reached by train from Perth in about half an hour. To put it simply, it's adorable. Despite its many historical attractions, including the old prison, a pleasant weekend market, and a picturesque harbour, Fremantle's love for eccentric sculptures sets it apart.

There are numerous excellent examples all over the city, but the most popular is the  giant rainbow constructed from containers of various colours. The Containerbow is about 20 minutes' walk north-east of Fremantle Station.

There isn't much else to see in the area, but this is definitely worth the trip.
